Over time, exposure to liquids such as coffee, soda, dark tea wine and even certain fruit juices can cause your teeth to become discolored or stained.

If you smoke or use other tobacco products, these can also damage and darken your teeth. Age may also play a role in tooth discoloration.

Luckily, Buckner Family Dental offers porcelain veneers that can help whiten and brighten your teeth, restoring your brilliant, white smile in no time at all.

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin, tooth-colored shells that are made to fit over and cover the front surface of your teeth. The shells are bonded to the tooth itself and have a natural appearance without extensive shaping. This makes them a good alternative to cosmetic dental crowns. Porcelain veneers are stain-resistant and can last anywhere between 5 and 10 years before they need to be replaced. This makes them a fast and cost-effective way to improve the look and shape of your teeth.

What are porcelain veneers used for?

Porcelain veneers are used for a variety of dental issues, including:
• Misaligned teeth
• Irregularly shaped teeth
• Uneven teeth
• Teeth that are worn or chipped
• Broken teeth
• Gaps between teeth
• Stained teeth
• Age-related tooth discoloration
• Discoloration due to overuse of antibiotics such as tetracycline
• Discoloration due to overuse of fluoride

What is involved in getting a porcelain veneer?

First the dentists at Buckner Family Dental will examine your teeth to ensure you are a good candidate for a porcelain veneer. X-rays or impressions of your teeth may need to be taken at this time. Once you are approved for a veneer, your dentist will prepare the teeth by removing a small amount (approximately half a millimeter) of tooth enamel. A model of the tooth will then be made and sent to a dental laboratory, where your porcelain veneer will be made. One to two weeks later you will have a second visit during which the veneer will be trimmed and shaped to ensure proper fit over your teeth. Your teeth will be cleaned and etched, and then your dentist will apply a special dental cement to adhere the veneer to your teeth. A special light is used to harden the cement quickly, and any excess cement will be removed.
